Travelling to a client’s recently, we managed to capture (safely and legally) the aftermath of a crash and it goes to show just how much oil and grease is discharged onto the roads and ultimately our drains as a result.

With winter well and truly upon us, and with more storms forecast over the next couple of days we are likely to see more beautiful but deadly rainbows on our roads.

What are these rainbows caused by?

In simple terms these are caused by oil leaks and fuel spills from vehicles mixing with water, which are then made visible when the sun hits the combination of fluids. While they may look pretty, they can cause significant problems to our storm water drains.

As the storm water flushes the road debris into the drainage system, at source gross pollutant traps capture the sediment, litter as well as the oil and grease.

While most (if not all) fuel stations will have Gross Pollutant Traps fitted at the time the fuel station was built – it depends on the age and location of the fuel station, not all fuel and oil that is spilt onto the roads happens in those convenient locations. Accidents, poorly maintained vehicles can and do leave fuel and oil on the more vulnerable roads and verges.

Retrofitting stormwater treatment systems can save money and the environment

With tightening stormwater regulations limited budgets and tight space constraints the SPEL stormsack can be easily installed into existing storm drains, and allows for easy removal of contaminants which are captured close to the surface.

Unfortunately, not all drains have this system installed, so it is up to all of us, where we can to prevent leaks and spills, accidents notwithstanding.

What can we do to help prevent oil and fuel spills?

•        Take care when driving in poor weather. Turn on your headlights and if necessary slow down. Several days of dry weather will mean the roads will be “slicker” than normal and accidents can and do happen when speed, rain and poor driving visibility occurs.
•        Ensure your vehicles are maintained and address any leaks as soon as they are identified.
•        Ensure your tyres and brake pads are not worn – and get them replaced if required; and
•        Dispose of your litter properly.

All of this sounds like common sense, and it is. But together we can all help prevent rainbows on our roads and problems with our waterways that come as a result of the accidental spills.
