Compliant Package Fire Pump Sets are Mandatory: Why cutting corners on price can be devastating

As one of the leading manufacturers of compliant* complete packaged fire pumps in Australia we are often called upon to inspect fire pump sets, that for one reason or another don’t meet the rigorous requirements, or have failed due to poor workmanship or materials.

Commissioning the systems and meeting the requirements:

We are regularly alarmed by organisations who install non-compliant fire pump systems. It could be argued that some of the systems we inspect are “old” and can’t be expected to meet today’s standards, and that is of course true. The problem is however, there are a number of other issues that should have been engineered out and weren’t – and the result of not doing so can be catastrophic in the event of a fire.

Review and recommendation of non-compliant systems:

When we are asked to inspect an installation, we are grateful for the opportunity to rectify a potentially costly and disastrous situation.

Senior members of the Allied Pumps team visit site and thoroughly check the pump system, taking detailed notes and photographic evidence before providing a report that details evident areas of non-compliance, complete with a series of recommendations.

Sharing our knowledge: 

Allied Pumps runs a series of Lunch and Learn sessions where we highlight areas of non-conformity and provide an illustration of what a compliant system looks like which is followed by a walk-through production where our visitors can see firsthand how we build compliant systems – every time.

Setting the standard:

Our first fire pump set was built in 1992 and delivered to a major hospital where it has spent many years of service and ready to run if the unthinkable happens and fire breaks out.
Allied Pumps has built package fire pump sets to four Australian Standards to date. As requirements change and building codes tighten, we take the time to evaluate what differences there are between the old standard and the new one. This determines how many changes we need to make to our systems and processes to meet the new standard. Once we have evaluated the changes we need to make, our engineers and design team work closely to develop the new specifications, we then upskill our production team and ensure our quality processes are in place so that every fire pump set that leaves our premises are compliant.

We were asked recently if there was a requirement to go back and retrofit ones that were built to previous standards and the answer is no. The Standard revisions aren’t applied retrospectively, however any modification to the building may trigger the requirement.

Testing capabilities:

Before sending our firepump sets on to the client, they are tested to run to capacity. While they are built to run to destruction if needs be, we need to ensure that our pump sets will do the job if and when they are needed.
