Exciting Innovations Provide Clean Drinking Water in Third World Countries

September 6 2017

Even in today’s modern age, many parts of the world still do not have access to clean drinking water, especially in third-world countries. Because these areas are not as advanced as our society here in Australia, they do not have the technology to purify their water supply, nor can they afford to obtain it. However, many organisations have now developed more affordable options for purifying drinking water in order to help these at-risk countries. Here’s a look at some of the most exciting options now in production.

Extracting Water from the Air

One of the most interesting developments in water technology is the ability to produce clean water from seemingly nothing at all. Several companies are currently working on technology that can extract water from the humidity or fog in the air. The technology works by pulling in air from the outside, then chilling it to its dew point. The condensation that forms is then collected and passed through a carbon filter so that it can be used for drinking, cooking, bathing and more. This type of system can be used anywhere that has access to electricity.

Although this technology has not been perfected yet, in some tests it has been able to produce 300 to 600 gallons of water per day. What’s more, multiple units can be chained together to create even more water. The technology is still being perfected to maximise its ability to produce water, but this solution holds a lot of promise for third-world countries.

Shock Electrodialysis

Electricity can also be used to remove salt from drinking water. To accomplish this, a machine delivers an electric current to a stream of flowing water. Panels on the sides of the device then attract the charged molecules, effectively pulling them out of the water. Although it involves the use of technology, this method is surprisingly affordable, simplifying the process of bringing it to the third-world areas that need it most.

Poly-Glu

Poly-Glu is another method for removing impurities from drinking water that is especially well-suited to third-world environments. When this powder is poured into a container of water, it bonds to any dirt or other particles in the water. Because it is heavier than the water itself, all of the sediment sinks to the bottom of the container. The end result is pure, clean water on top. This method is easy and affordable, so it will be easy to introduce to third-world countries.
