Why WaterMark™ Certified Products

April 26 2017

Allied Pumps is an approved user of the WaterMark™ Certification Scheme. This is the foremost certification scheme for plumbing and drainage products and materials in Australia. This is obtained by meeting certain standards and specifications.

Let’s take a look at what WaterMark™ Certification means, and why it is so important for public health and safety.

WHAT IS THE WATERMARK™ CERTIFICATION SCHEME?

According to the National Construction Code (NCC) Volume Three, certain plumbing and drainage materials must be certified and authorised for use in a plumbing or drainage installation. The certification is managed and administered by The Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB). Products and materials that are marked with the WaterMark™ trademark are certified to be adequate and safe to use in plumbing and drainage systems in Australia.

WHY IS THE WATERMARK™ CERTIFICATION SCHEME IMPORTANT?

Waterborne diseases, such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery, can be spread as a result of improper plumbing system design and maintenance. The WaterMark™ Certification Scheme ensures that all plumbing and drainage materials and products are fit for purpose and appropriately authorised for use. This leads to superior plumbing installations for the benefit of public health and safety. As a result, Australia enjoys some of the safest water and waste systems in the world.

WHAT IS THE LAW REGARDING PLUMBING AND DRAINAGE PRODUCTS IN AUSTRALIA?

The WaterMark™ Certification Scheme is mandatory. It is illegal to use products which are not WaterMark™ certified in plumbing or drainage system installations. At Allied Pumps, you can be sure that we take this very seriously.

HOW IS THE SCHEME ADMINISTERED?

The WaterMark™ Certification Scheme is managed and administered by the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB). The Joint Accreditation System of Australia and New Zealand accredits certain companies, called WaterMark™ Conformity Assessment Bodies (WCABs), across Australia to evaluate and certify plumbing and drainage materials and products. These WCABs evaluate new products for inclusion on the WaterMark™ Product Database, and deal with applications to the ABCB for approval of WaterMark™ Technical Specifications. This enables new products to be added to the WaterMark™ Product Database.

HOW TO OBTAIN WATERMARK™ CERTIFICATION

When an organisation satisfies an approved WCAB that their product meets the necessary requirements, they can have their product WaterMark™ licensed. It will be easily identifiable by the WaterMark™ trademark. The company or organisation will be granted a WaterMark™ Certificate of Conformity and their product or material will be listed on the WaterMark™ Product Database.
