Stormwater Detention Using the SPEL StormChamber Solution

October 3 2018

With an increase in development and population in urban areas, stormwater drains, and systems are struggling to cope with the vast quantities of rain water that runs into them during peak periods of severe (intensity and duration) weather.

With greater development and less open land for the excess water to drain into Local Councils now require stormwater detention for all new developments. However, with less space to excavate in these areas means design engineers are looking to solutions that are flexible in their application while meeting all requirements.

Allied Pumps was presented this challenge by the design engineer of Vincent Street, Leederville. The site had limited space which was further impacted as it also had a high-water table which restricted the excavation depth. The site also needed to handle extreme vehicle loadings. Taking all these factors into consideration, it was recognised that traditional stormwater detention was not possible for the new development.

The solution:

Having undertaken some independent research, the design engineer approached Allied Pumps after determining the SPEL HDPE StormChamber would be the best possible solution for this application. (Read more)

Not only is the SPEL Stormchamber a modular stormwater storage system designed to manage excess stormwater runoff on a developed site where there is limited space for the construction of a detention system, the SPEL Stormchamber has a number of other key advantages over other stormwater detention systems:

Efficient installation:

It is more cost-effective and requires less maintenance than other types of underground storm water management systems.

Design flexibility:

The SPEL StormChamber can be configured to fit into almost any site and with the side-portal feed providing greater flexibility in engineering and hydraulic design, eliminating circuitous routing of feed pipes from inlet structures to entry point of a header pipe.

Open infiltrative surface area:

SPEL StormChamber is an open bottomed, high-density polyethylene infiltration chamber for subsurface retention or detention of storm water runoff.

The SPEL StormChamber provides an environmentally progressive and technologically advanced storage and pollutant removal solution.

The StormChamber reduces nutrient and other pollutant loadings by taking advantage of the natural biological and physical properties of the soil, directly comparable to the functions of a septic drain field. It also recharges ground water drinking supplies, while concurrently helping to maintain base flow to streams, wetlands, lakes, and ponds, and to counter salt-water intrusion.

In the case of the Vincent Street Project, the completed design employed a single line of SPEL HDPE Stormchambers with a high-level entry from the syphonic roof drainage system and a high-level exit to an Allied Pumps Packaged Stormwater Pump Station.
