Peristaltic Pumps: The Perfect choice for tough pumping situations

August 28 2018

Peristaltic pumps (also known as hose pumps, tube pumps) are a type of positive displacement pump which are widely used in laboratories, water treatment, chemical processing and food processing industries. It creates a steady flow for dosing and blending and is able to pump a variety of fluids with different viscosities. The user friendly industrial pumps are designed for heavy duty applications.

PERISTALTIC PUMPS:

The beauty of peristaltic pumps lies in their simplicity.

Pumping action is achieved by compression of a circular loop of elastomeric hose with two diametrically opposed rotating shoes. This rotational motion forces the fluid in the hose to move ahead of each shoe. When each shoe reaches the end of the loop, the reinforced tube immediately returns to its original shape.  This alternating contraction and relaxation creates an almost full vacuum that is able to draw the next amount of fluid into the pump casing through the inlet piping.

The smooth movement of fluids ensures reliable suction and priming. The pump housing is partially filled with lubricant, which also aids the smooth running of the shoes on the hose. The inside of the hose and hose inserts are the only pieces of equipment in contact with pumped fluids. Consequently, peristaltic pumps are a perfect choice for moving corrosive and even heated liquids without any damage to pumps parts.

These operational features make peristaltic pumps ideal for mining operations that require typically 24/7 operations and the transfer of abrasive or viscous slurries and the handling of fluids that contain large pieces of particulate matter, such as rocks or pebbles.

Other benefits of peristaltic pumps:

  • They have a seal-less design. This eliminates leaks and potential contamination.
  • Fluids are contained within the hose and designed to cope with even the toughest of media.
  • The hose is the primary maintenance component of a peristaltic pump, and is interchangeable with all major brands. The application will determine the hose material:
  • Natural rubber – is ideal for use with diluted acids and alcohols and has excellent abrasion resistance
  • Ethylene propylene diene monomer – has a high chemical resistance to concentrated acids, alcohols and ketones
  •  Hypalon – Strongly resistant to chemicals, temperature extremes and UV light
  •  Buna-N – Highly wear resistant to oil products
  • It is a self-priming pump and capable of running dry and in reverse.

Applications:

Peristaltic pumps can be used in a variety of processes including:

  • Dosing of flocculants and coagulants
  • Dosing of biocides for cooling water treatment
  • Dosing of chemicals for pH control
  • Dosing of corrosion inhibitors, scale inhibitors cooling water treatment or boiler water treatment
  • Dosing of disinfectants like sodium hypochlorite
  • Dosing of chemical cleaning agents for membrane filtration including RO
